New school building in Antwerp collapsed: at least five dead

A green school still under construction is collapsing in Antwerp, Belgium. At least three people are killed. Others are missing.

Antwerp (dpa) – At least five people were killed in the collapse of a primary school under construction in the Belgian port city of Antwerp. Search parties found four more dead under the rubble on Saturday.

Shortly after the accident on Friday afternoon, a body had already been recovered. The Belga news agency reported that it will be checked whether all missing persons have now been located. In that case, the search will be stopped at the scene of the accident.

Parts of the new building and scaffolding in the Nieuw Zuid district had collapsed for unknown reasons. Nine people were saved alive, eight of whom were seriously injured. Her condition was stable on Saturday. Another lightly injured person was able to leave the hospital after a few hours. The victims are construction site workers.

According to Belga, the construction company responsible said they were doing everything they could to find out what happened. “We’re trying to answer all of the questions, but it’s still too early at the moment.” The Belgian King Philippe visited the scene of the accident on Saturday afternoon and was instructed.
