NFL Free Agency 2021: Jets sign Sheldon Rankins – Adoree 'Jackson meets the Giants

The New York Jets have signed Sheldon Rankins. In addition, Adoree ‘Jackson meets with the New York Giants. You can follow all developments of the day here in the live ticker for reading.

Sheldon Rankins signs with the Jets

The Jets have signed another free agent. The NFL Network reports that Rankins signed a two-year contract in New York. This should bring the defensive tackle up to 17 million dollars.

Rankins had previously played for the Saints, but had been struggling with injury problems in recent years. At first he tore his Achilles tendon, after the recovery the Achilles tendon caused problems on the other foot. So now in New York he hopes to get back on track.

Adoree ‘Jackson meets with the Giants

After the signing of Kenny Golladay, the next signing of the G-Men is apparently in the making. After Golladay, Adoree ‘Jackson also meets with those responsible for the New York team.

Jackson had been fired from the Tennessee Titans, who saved more than ten million dollars in Cap. In 2020, the cornerback missed large parts of the season, but previously the Speedster was considered one of the best young cornerbacks in the league. However, the Giants are not alone in their interest: The Rams, Chiefs, Raiders and Cardinals are also said to have their eyes on Jackson.

Free Agency: Further news at a glance

  • The Chicago Bears signed Jeremiah Attaochu. The pass rusher last played for the Denver Broncos and booked five sacks in 2020.

  • Isaiah Wilson is officially a free agent. After his release from the Miami Dolphins, no team was interested in securing the contract of the first-round pick from the previous year.

  • K’Waun Williams meets with the Kansas City Chiefs. A meeting between the slot cornerback and the team is scheduled to take place on Tuesday. Most recently, Williams had played for the 49ers.

NFL: Free Agency 2021 in the live ticker for reading

11.30 p.m.: That’s it for today. I say goodbye, but I’ll be back for you tomorrow from around 3 p.m. with the ticker. Hopefully there will be more going on in the market than today. Take care and see you tomorrow!

11:15 p.m.: Because our ticker is slowly coming to an end, an indication of what to look out for as an NFL fan this night. First of all, of course, there would be Adoree ‘Jackson, who meets with the Giants and possibly also signs there right away. Second: Kareem Jackson. The Safety has a good chance to stay with the Broncos. Denver has already invested heavily in its secondary in the Free Agency.

11 p.m .: We still have a deal! The Bears sign Jeremiah Attaochu. At least that’s what Aaron Wilson reports from the Houston Chronicle . The pass rusher was last active for the Broncos. In 2020 he booked five sacks for Denver.

10:40 p.m . : Another visit: Damontae Kazee will meet the Lions. Safety was recently active for the Falcons, but it is not one of the top safetys in the league. We’ll take the whole thing with us as news anyway!

10:20 p.m.: A new addition for the Chiefs? K’Waun Williams will fly to Kansas City tomorrow to meet with the team. This is what Mike Kaye reports from NJ.com . Williams is one of the better slot corners in the league. Most recently it was reported that the Jets were interested in him.

9:50 p.m.: Isaiah Wilson is officially a free agent. No other team wanted the offensive tackle after his release in Miami. Wilson had been drafted by the Titans in the first round of drafts last year, but kept receiving negative attention. Finally, Tennessee traded him to the Dolphins, where he again attracted attention with delays and missed appointments. Let’s hope he can turn the corner again.

9.40 p.m.: Anyone who hoped that Sheldon Rankins’ signing would trigger an avalanche of events was obviously disappointed. We are still waiting for the outcome of the meeting between Adoree ‘Jackson and the Giants. The Rams, Chiefs, Raiders and the Cardinals should also show interest in the cornerback. That’s what Mike Jones reported from USA Today . If there are actually several serious interested parties, that should drive up the price.

9.10 p.m.: We have a trade! But only one trade that just became official. The Seahawks have just officially announced Gabe Jackson’s move. The Guard comes from the Raiders, in return, Seattle’s five-round pick will go to Las Vegas in the upcoming draft. So Russell Wilson gets at least a little help on the offensive line.

9 p.m.: According to Tom Pelissero, the Bengals were up to Sheldon Rankins. Is Cincy looking for a successor to Geno Atkins? It would be a bit of a surprise, after all, the team only brought in DJ Reader last year and signed Larry Ogunjobi this week. There shouldn’t be any real alternatives to Rankins anyway: Ndamukong Suh, Jurrell Casey and Kawann Short will probably have little interest in playing for a team under construction. So we can add Defensive Tackle to our list of potential Bengals draft targets.

8:35 p.m.: Jackson’s meeting with the Giants is to take place this afternoon, by the way – the information is of course in US time. It’s half past three in New York. So it is quite possible that the meeting will take place within the next hour.

8:20 p.m.: By the way, Adam Schefter has been without a tweet for almost 24 hours. Maybe someone should check out the ESPN insider? Not that anything happened to him. I’m just saying …

7:55 p.m.: The Saints lose another high performer. Among other things, New Orleans had to let Drew Brees, Trey Hendrickson, Emmanuel Sanders, Janoris Jenkins, Jared Cook, Kwon Alexander, Thomas Morstead and now Rankins go in this offseason. Somebody should say again that the salary cap is “fake” …

7.45 p.m.: Tom Pelissero, also from the NFL Network , reports that the Bengals were also very interested in Rankins. So in the end, the jets win the race. If the contract is structured in a more team-friendly way, it could be a low-risk, high-reward deal for Gang Green.

Jets sign Sheldon Rankins

7:35 p.m.: We have a deal! The New York Jets sign Sheldon Rankins. The defensive tackle signs a two-year contract for up to $ 17 million. This is reported by Mike Garofolo from the NFL Network . Rankins is a good defensive tackle, but he has had to contend with injuries recently. $ 8.5 million a year would be a proud price. So the main focus should be on the “up to”. So: What is the guaranteed sum and how much can he earn through bonuses?

7:25 p.m.: At the Giants, Jackson would add a secondary made up of James Bradberry, Logan Ryan, Jabrill Peppers and Xavier McKinney – a unit with great potential! The question is what kind of contract is being talked about in the negotiations. Jackson is only 25 and a year ago was considered one of the best young corners in the NFL. However, he largely missed the last season due to injury. Will the Giants still give him a long and well-paid contract? Or is it more about a shorter Prove-It deal? One can be curious.

Giants meet with Adoree ‘Jackson

7 p.m.: The Giants only signed Kenny Golladay yesterday – but they are apparently not finished yet! According to ESPN’s Jordan Schultz, Adoree ‘Jackson will be a “high priority” in the team’s offseason plans. The cornerback is scheduled to meet with representatives of the Giants today. Golladay also met with Giants officials shortly before he signed (Urban Meyer will like it).

6:35 p.m.: Urban Meyer has been Head Coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars since this year, before Meyer worked exclusively at college. So some things in the NFL are new to the coach. And he doesn’t seem to like everything. “That was terrible,” Meyer described the course of the Free Agency to ESPN . “I think in the past you could meet the players, eat with them, test their football intellect and character. It shouldn’t be like today. Not when you are making important decisions for your organization.”

So-called player visits are actually a rarity in the free agency. Kenny Golladay last met with the Bears and the Giants, but that was an exception. Usually speed is required in this phase of the offseason, so there is no time for meetings. Meyer is obviously not a fan of it.

6.15 p.m.: Justin Simmons’ contract is now fully known. The Safety receives a signing bonus of 16 million dollars and base salaries of 2, 15, 14 and 14.5 million dollars at the Broncos. So he counts 6 million dollars against the cap this season. In the coming years, however, it will be 19 million per year. A proud price for a safety.

5.45 p.m.: Deshaun Watson is currently facing enormous allegations off the field. The quarterback is said to have sexually molested numerous masseuses. Some internet detectives already suspected the Texans were behind the allegations. Watson should be moved to stay, it was said in part. For John McClain of the Houston Chronicle , who is always well informed on Texans topics, such considerations are groundless. The reporter still firmly assumes a trade from Watson. There was nothing about the team’s offseason to suggest that they were working on a future together, McClain said.

5.30 p.m.: Kenny Golladay’s exact contract is now known. The most important key points: In 2021, Golladay’s base salary was kept to a minimum, so he will only count 4.7 million against the Cap in the coming season. In the following seasons, however, his cap hit rises to more than 21 million per year. 2025 is also a void year. Golladay will then count against the cap at $ 3.4 million, though his contract will practically expire in 2024.

5.15 p.m.: It seems to me as if my colleagues Rapoport, Schefter and Co. (or even all NFL GMs?) Heed the rule of Sunday rest a little too much. So far it has definitely been extremely quiet today. There is no shortage of cap space. Here are a few teams that still have more than enough leeway: The Jaguars (43 million), the Colts (36 million), the Panthers (31 million) and also the Jets (31 million) – so: Turn to the bacon, teams!

4:55 p.m.: The 49ers fire wide receiver Chris Thompson. Thompson had been under contract with the Niners since 2019 but hadn’t made a game for the franchise. The layoff brings $ 780,000 in Cap Space to San Francisco.

4.35 p.m.: After their numerous layoffs, the Raiders are looking for (cheap) reinforcements for the offensive line. Elijah Wilkinson will not be this reinforcement (for the time being). The offensive tackle traveled to Las Vegas for a meeting, but left the training grounds without a signed contract. Whether Wilkinson really has NFL starter level is another question …

4:20 p.m.: What else is happening at the Baltimore Ravens? The team was on Juju Smith-Schuster, allegedly offering the receiver the most money. There was also interest in Kenny Golladay. But now there are no longer any top receivers on the market. Is Baltimore satisfied with a TY Hilton or Alshon Jeffery? Is there a trade? Or are the Ravens looking for their salvation in the draft? My tip: Eric DeCosta is still waiting to see whether an interesting receiver will not be dismissed after all. In a pinch, a receiver has to be (again) in the draft.

4.00 p.m.: After the most important free agent deals have taken place, it would be time for a few trades again, don’t you think so? Last year there were tons of blockbuster deals with Deandre Hopkins, Stefon Diggs and DeForest Buckner. Who could it hit this year? Orlando Brown’s desire to trade with the Ravens is well known. Will the Chargers or maybe even the Chiefs be active here? At Deshaun Watson, nothing should happen in the next few days and weeks …

3.40 p.m.: We can also report a piece of news: Jon’Vea Johnson goes to the Jaguars. Don’t you know Don’t be embarrassed. The wide receiver was claimed after his release in Dallas. He was an Undrafted Free Agent in 2019 and trained on Dallas’ Practice Squad last year.

3:25 p.m.: Akiem Hicks will probably stay with the Bears. The Chicago Tribune reports. Hicks had received permission from his franchise to explore the possibility of a trade himself. Apparently, however, no suitable offer was made. Hicks’ contract must have played a role in this. The defensive lineman will make a whopping $ 12 million in the coming season. A layoff that would save $ 10.5 million is not said to be an option.

3:15 p.m.: Here are a few deals I’d love to see:

    • Alejandro Villanueva on the Chargers: Los Angeles has already strengthened its offensive line well with Corey Linsley and Matt Feiler. There is still a question mark on Left Tackle. Villanueva is a very solid tackle that would be valuable on a one or two year deal. The Chargers could draft a tackle, but it doesn’t have to start immediately.

    • Richard Sherman on the Jets: The Jets have arranged some good deals in the Free Agency, but the cornerback position is still a real construction site. Sherman knows Robert Saleh’s system inside out, he would bring quality as a starter, but would also be able to support other young corners.

    • Adoree ‘Jackson on the Cardinals: The Cardinals have also attracted attention with some moves in the Free Agency. But the Cardinals also have a clear need for the cornerback position. Jackson can – if he’s fit – take on the role of number one defense and could make Patrick Peterson forget. The team’s strong D-Line could also benefit him.

3:05 p.m.: Richard Sherman, who is still a very good zone corner, and Adoree ‘Jackson, who – when he’s back at 100 percent – can also be a number one corner, are on the market. In the Pass Rush, Jadeveon Clowney, Justin Houston and Melvin Ingram could help many a team. In the offense, the most quality can be found in the offensive tackles: Alejandro Villanueva, Russell Okung, Mitchell Schwartz, Eric Fisher and Dennis Kelly are all NFL starters.

3 p.m.: There was already a lot going on yesterday: Kyle Fuller went to the Broncos, Xavier Rhodes stayed with the Colts and the deal we’ve all been waiting for: Kenny Golladay signed with the Giants. The really big names are out of the market, but there are still plenty of free agents who can at least be good starters. Let’s see what happens today.

2:55 p.m.: Welcome to the next issue of our free agency ticker. Let’s go!

You can find all developments of yesterday here.

NFL Free Agency 2021: These players are still in the market

Jadeveon Clowney is still on the market. The Edge Defender had a bad last season but its potential is undeniable. With Melvin Ingram and Justin Houston there are also other strong pass rushers who are still without a team.

In the secondary, Adoree ‘Jackson is perhaps the most interesting candidate. The cornerback was sacked by the Titans due to cap reasons, but can be a strong number one if he’s fit. Other cornerbacks on the market: Richard Sherman and Malcolm Butler.

Other names to keep an eye on: James Conner, TY Hilton, Ndamukong Suh, Mitchell Schwartz, Alejandro Villanueva, Kareem Jackson, and KJ Wright.
