The Kansas City Chiefs surprisingly split from Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz on Thursday. The two offensive tackles were important parts of the team that won the Super Bowl in 2019.
In Super Bowl LV, however, both were missing injured, which ultimately became the Chiefs’ undoing. But now the previous year’s champion is drawing a line and with this step saves more than 18 million dollars on Cap Space.
And since Center Austin Reiter and the guards Kelechi Osemele and Mike Remmers will also become free agents, the O-Line of the Chiefs could get an almost completely new face in the coming season.
Fisher was the first pick overall in the 2013 draft and thus also the first draft pick ever under head coach Andy Reid. Schwartz, in turn, came to the Chiefs as a second round pick in 2012.
Fisher missed Super Bowl LV against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with an Achilles tendon injury sustained in the AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills. Schwartz, on the other hand, even missed the last three months of the season with a back injury.
Chiefs: Internal reinforcements approaching
However, the offensive line is expected to receive two internal reinforcements for 2021: On the one hand, Guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif is expected back after he had given up the previous season and instead worked as a first aider in the corona pandemic in his native Canada.
And the 2020 third-round pick offensive tackle Lucas Niang had also waived the season due to Covid concerns.
