The New England Patriots have apparently agreed on a trade for offensive tackle Trent Brown with the Las Vegas Raiders. Brown played for New England in 2018 and won the Super Bowl.
That’s what Ian Rapoport reports from the NFL Network . According to this, Brown is said to have previously signed a new one-year contract that lowers his cap hit for 2021. Before that, he had two years and $ 19.25 million under contract.
The compensation for Brown is unclear, but since the Raiders would have sacked Brown in the worst case anyway before the start of the new league year in the coming week, the Patriots should only invest one or more late draft picks.
The 27-year-old is returning to Foxborough, where he had already landed in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers in 2018. At that time he started all 16 season games and the three playoff games on the way to triumph in Super Bowl LIII over the Los Angeles Rams.
He then moved to the Raiders as a free agent for $ 66 million over four years. He was first elected to the Pro Bowl in 2019, but in 2020 he missed 11 games due to a mistake in a pre-game injection that caused air to get into his bloodstream. In addition, he later ended up on the Covid-19 list.
Patriots: position for Trent Brown still unclear
While Brown played mainly right tackle for the 49ers and for the past two years in Las Vegas, he played the left side of the offensive line for the Patriots. It is still unclear which position he will play for the Patriots.
In principle there are two possibilities: Either Brown takes over the left side and the previous left tackle Isaiah Wynn changes to his college position, playing left guard as a replacement for free agent Joe Thuney, who will very likely leave the team.
Or Brown plays Right Tackle, whereupon the Patriots would fire Marcus Cannon, which is already in the room. At the same time, last year’s rookie Michael Onwenu would take over left guard.
