The damage to “Ida” has not yet been repaired when another hurricane is already reaching the USA. His first destination: Texas. Over land it weakens to a tropical storm. But it remains dangerous.
Austin – Hurricane “Nicholas” reached the coast of the US state Texas on Tuesday night (local time). The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Twitter that the magnitude one in five hurricane hit land on the Matagorda Peninsula, southwest of Houston.
However, it then weakened to a tropical storm with wind speeds of up to 110 kilometers per hour. Initially, nothing was known about damage or casualties after it hit the US Gulf Coast.
The meteorologists at the hurricane center reported heavy rain and strong winds on the affected stretch of coast. They also warned of floods that could hit Texas as well as areas in the eastern states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama and could bring local rain of up to half a meter with them.

The east coast of Texas was hit by Hurricane “Harvey” in August 2017. Large parts of the country were under water, including the fourth largest US metropolis Houston. Dozens of people were killed at the time. The damage balance: 125 billion dollars – only exceeded by Hurricane “Katrina”, which hit New Orleans, Louisiana, in particular in 2005.
“Nicholas” is scheduled to move across southeast Texas on Tuesday and then across Louisiana on Wednesday. People there are still struggling with the aftermath of Hurricane “Ida” two weeks ago. “Nicholas” is likely to weaken further to a tropical depression on Wednesday, the NHC continues.
Coming from the Gulf of Mexico, the storm had gained strength late Monday and was upgraded to a hurricane. The US media reported that the power had already failed in some areas along the Texan coast.
“Ida” hit the Louisiana coast southwest of New Orleans on August 29 as a dangerous four-of-five hurricane. Then he weakened. Remnants of the storm caused severe weather and catastrophic floods in the northeastern United States. Dozens of people died across the country. dpa
