Nobel Peace Prize 2021: WHO is at the forefront of betting shops

Oslo – The Nobel Committee in Oslo will announce on Friday (11.00 a.m.) who will receive this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. There is no clear favorite for the most prestigious political award in the world this year. Only the number of candidates is known: 329, of which 234 are people and 95 are organizations. This is the third largest number of nominees ever.

As always, there is much speculation this time about who might receive the Nobel Prize. While the betting shops favor the World Health Organization WHO, which is very present in the corona pandemic, as in the previous year, Henrik Urdal names other names in his annual list. The director of the Oslo Peace Research Institute (PRIO) sees the organization Reporters Without Borders at the forefront, followed in second place by the Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tichanovskaya before the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) with its director Patricia Espinosa.

The Stockholm peace research institute Sipri also considers a prize to be appropriate for the fight against the climate crisis. “This year it could be the turn of climate change,” says Sipri Director Dan Smith. The topic is extremely topical, and there do not seem to be any other clear, strong candidates. “This year has been a bad year for peace,” says Smith, referring to the situation in Afghanistan and Ethiopia, for example.

So will there be a Nobel Prize for climate activist Greta Thunberg? Smith warns that choosing a single person can be problematic. “Greta Thunberg is an outstanding young activist. But there are of course many other young activists, and she herself points out that one should also think of the others, ”says the peace researcher. He therefore has an idea: “It would be really great to see a list of 10 to 20 named young climate activists from all over the world.” This would emphasize that this is a social movement.
