The ZDF report series “Plan b” takes up everyday problems and presents feasible solutions. A TV review.
Frankfurt – The reader’s question, where is the positive, once inspired the writer Erich Kästner to write a less than optimistic poem. It says, among other things: “The human species went out of the woods / And with it house and state and world”. Not the only line in the eight stanzas that could be prophetically applied to our present. Warning signs are easier to paint, blind confidence has a rather enthusiastic effect, sometimes even becoming bombast.
The team of the ZDF series “Plan b” does not fall into this trap. Current challenges for society and politics are topics in the weekly reports, and the team is always on the lookout for constructive solutions, some of which have already been tried and tested, and for people who are full of ideas and can use the lever.
Report on ZDF: Between Olaf Scholz and gender equality
This Saturday (July 16) begins a four-part cycle within the series with the subheading “There’s something going on, Germany!”. This borrowing from the casual language of young people sets the tone, it can also be found in the first contribution, dedicated to the topic of equal rights.
What does gender equality actually mean in 2022, asks presenter Antonia Lilly Schanze. And receives the counter-question from colleague Anna Thiele: “Now that we have a male chancellor in Olaf Scholz?”
Difficulty in Germany: Women get less because women are women
In business, men are in charge. Anna Thiele lists: Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos – “they determine what we think, what we shop and who we should envy on Instagram.” Tijen Onaran is a protagonist who was politically active and attended meetings and other events found only among men. Eventually, not without difficulty but ultimately success, she founded her own company with the aim of connecting, promoting and supporting women in business. She is now an investor herself.
The portrait of Onaran is accompanied by figures worth knowing. For example, on unequal pay: Statistically speaking, if a man earns one euro, the female colleague only receives 0.82 euros. When women solicit investments, they are only granted
a third of what male entrepreneurs can acquire. Women achieve the higher returns: 74 cents per euro invested, for men it is just 29 cents. In a scientific paper one would have to differentiate these exaggerated statistics, but the trend is described correctly.
“Plan b” on ZDF: hit parade of female role models
It seems a bit strange that the film author Amelia Wischnewski structures her quickly edited and pleasantly musically accompanied reportage (production: Broadcastable GmbH) according to the hit parade principle, in which the entrepreneurs and politically active women presented are ranked according to a role model, without the underlying evaluation criteria become clear.

Tijen Onaran takes 3rd place. Next comes the lawyer Sandra Runge, who was fired from her previous job the day after she returned from parental leave. This makes her one of 72 percent of all expectant mothers who report various types of discrimination at work. As a consequence, Runge set up his own law firm and founded Coworking Toddler, a company that spatially combines childcare and workplaces.
First place with rubber bands: This woman shows that there is another way
First place goes to Cordelia Röders-Arnold and her business partner Waldemar Zeiler. Zeiler founded a condom company and handed it over to the workforce two years ago. The working conditions are child- and parent-friendly, and there are unusual management positions such as Head of Menstruation Einhorn. Businessman Waldemar Zeiler is convinced: For men, feminism is neither a disadvantage nor a threat, but an asset.
