Postman hoards hundreds of letters – including 700 election notices

An employee of the Deutsche Post in Schleswig-Holstein is said to have suppressed hundreds of voting notifications. But the police find more at his home.

Schleswig – Internal investigators at Deutsche Post DHL * have had their sights on the employee from Schleswig in Schleswig-Holstein for a long time. Election notifications for the villages of Borgwedel and Stexwig (Schleswig-Flensburg district) repeatedly disappeared on his route. In the end there were 700. The suspicion: the postman deliberately withheld the letters. The Deutsche Post AG in Schleswig-Holstein then switched on the criminal police.

The officials finally searched the suspect postman’s apartment in Schleswig on Tuesday (21.09.2021). What they made sure of, should have surprised even the police.

Because the officials found what they were looking for – a hundredfold. The police discovered not only the 700 election notifications they were looking for, but also other boxes with letters – “a four-digit number,” as the police wrote in a press release.

The public prosecutor’s office has now initiated an investigation against the employee of Deutsche Post. According to a police spokeswoman, it is still unclear why the man hoarded the letters in his apartment. However, the Kripo does not currently believe that the embezzlement is politically motivated.

The citizens who have waited in vain for their voting notifications should now have finally received mail. The municipal administration has sent new letters to the households concerned.

But even without the election notification, nothing would have stood in the way of going to the polls in the federal election 2021 * next Sunday (September 26th, 2021). According to the federal election regulations, the following applies in principle: As long as the citizen is entered in the electoral roll, he can vote without notification of the election. If you did not receive a voting slip despite your request for postal voting, you can get a new one by 12 noon on Saturday (25.09.2021). However, the election letter must be received by the responsible office by 6 p.m. on Sunday (September 26th, 2021). This is now getting tight by post, the letter should be delivered on site.
