The documentary “Secrets of the Royal Palaces”, which was broadcast on the TV station Channel 5, among other things, gives a glimpse behind the walls of Windsor Castle *, Kensington Palace * & Co. In the first episode of the eight-part documentary series, Kevin Andrews, who used to work as an upholsterer in Buckingham Palace *, describes a funny incident in which a colleague made a serious misstep in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II *. As Andrews reports in the documentary, his friend was just dismantling a desk in a room in the palace when the door opened: “A woman said, ‘Would you like a cup of tea?’ and he said, ‘Yeah, I want a cup of tea. In a mug. Two pieces of sugar. Artisan tea. I don’t want that rubbish I had when I was here last time, that fine china and all that saucer stuff. ‘”

The craftsman did not adhere to the strict courtly protocol at the time, after all it was only shortly afterwards that he realized that the Queen herself had taken his tea order.
