Queen Elizabeth II: what to do and what not to do when addressing her

In the year of Queen Elizabeth’s jubilee, the chance of meeting a real royal increases. What you can say on such an occasion or better not.

London – Is it acceptable to shake hands with a true royal? Is it still fashionable nowadays as a female to curtsey and as a man to bow? There is a lot of uncertainty as to etiquette and protocol.
To be on the safe side, you can heed the following tips in a gender- and corona-compliant manner.*

Duchess Meghan* (40) openly reported in an interview with Oprah Winfrey (68) 2021* about her initial difficulties with behavior when she first met the regent. When Prince Harry* (37) asked her if she knew how to curtsey, she replied, “But it’s your grandmother,” and he said, “It’s the Queen.” Even the royals bow to senior family members, and it is common for Duchess Kate* (40) and the ladies present to curtsey when Queen Elizabeth II* arrives at an event.

As a mere mortal, when meeting the British regent, it is appropriate to call her “Your Majesty” and then move on to a “ma’am” spoken with a short “a”. Even if the official website expressly wants to refrain from binding rules of conduct in close contact with the Royal Family*, traditional courtesy is a good idea. If you meet a male member of the royal family, you should first address him with “Your Royal Highness” and then with “Sir”. For female members, the first form of address is “Your Royal Highness”, followed by “Ma’am”.

During an event in 2018 where Prince William* (39) and Duchess Kate visited the charity Centrepoint, guests were given a laminated card with brief instructions on how to deal with the Cambridges. Guidelines said the two royals should only shake hands when offered and that a “respectful bow of the head” was more appropriate than a bow or curtsy.

Chelsea Jenkins, also a guest at the event, later tweeted that the firstborn of Prince Charles, 73, had joked about the card and mumbled something about “updating the card”. * 24royal.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA
