Robes like from a bygone era and fairytale locations: No wonder that the “Bridgerton” series offers inspiration for so many wedding celebrations. Especially for bridal wear.
Schnaittach / Chemnitz – Do you know the Netflix series “Bridgerton”? Then you will surely understand why bridal fashion for the 2022 festive season is based on this. For those who do not know “Bridgerton”:
The romance series on the streaming service Netflix takes place in Great Britain between around 1810 and 1820 in the Regency era – the fashion shown there is therefore also called “Regencycore”. These include empire dresses, babydoll tops, capes, Mary Jane shoes, and crystal jewelry, as well as pearl headbands. Everything is very romantic, very playful and richly decorated.
Actually, this fashion doesn’t really match the rest of the image in the shops – but that’s exactly what makes it so attractive. Where the planning of small parties is associated with insecurities due to corona, Regencycore fashion is something to dream away: to opulent balls, tea parties and receptions that we may never experience in everyday life.
By the way: In terms of content, the series revolves primarily around arranging marriages for marriageable daughters by dressing up for one ball after the other.
Big robes and subtle sexiness
And so this fashion style is perfect for weddings, where things have always been a bit more splendid, fairytale-like, more romantic than everyday life. And where brides wear clothes that, at best, they only wear once in a lifetime.
And what does that mean for this season’s dresses? “You can see a lot of large robes and figure-hugging silhouettes in the current wedding fashion,” says Kerrin Wiesener from the Association of German Wedding Planners. According to Wiesener, deep cuttings are currently not in fashion. But high leg slits, which can let skin flash out depending on the movement.
The details are trending
However, there is no longer one big trend in bridal fashion. Susann Lippe-Bernhard, editor-in-chief of the magazine “Braut & Bräutigam” from Münster, calls the selection “Divers”. “There are dresses for the appearance of a princess as well as wedding suits for the bride with a clear look.” Accordingly, the trends are not primarily about completely new dress styles, but about the details.

This includes dresses with sleeves, for example, which have recently been on offer more often and have also been bought with great pleasure. Now for the upgrade: the sleeves of many dresses can be removed, says wedding planner Jacqueline Exel from Chemnitz. “That of course makes a dress totally changeable, you have two looks in one, so to speak.”

Because the sleeves are often so elaborately designed that they are themselves a fashion statement on the dress – for example puff sleeves made of transparent fabric, trumpet sleeves with extra length with embroidery or balloon sleeves made of tulle.
Like this in the morning, like this in the evening
Speaking of changeable clothes: “Overkirts that are worn during the day for a wedding and taken off at the party in the evening are also in demand,” says Jacqueline Exel. And for rather simple and narrow-cut dresses, there are, for example, floor-length capes made of delicate tulle or lace, which change the look at times.
The designers of the dresses currently like to use satin and silk, crepe fabrics and chiffon. In addition to classic white, there are also many cream and champagne-colored models on offer for wedding dresses.
And dresses in blush tones – the name originally comes from the cosmetics sector and describes delicate pink for the cheeks. Which brings us back to the fashion of Regencycore and the Netflix series “Bridgerton”: The world depicted in it is so pastel, so pink. Just perfect for a romantic wedding. dpa
