Archaeologists have discovered three mummies buried with golden foil tongues at El Bahnasa.
El-Bahnasa – Even after their death, they should be able to communicate with the gods. Therefore, the three mummies with golden tongues were sent to the afterlife. They died about 2,500 years ago in El Bahnasa, south of Cairo.
The three mummies were discovered by Spanish archaeologists, Business Insider reports. The team has been working in the excavation area in El Bahnasa for almost three decades. The mummified bodies belong to a man, a woman and an estimated three-year-old child. The special thing about this find: three amulets made of gold foil were buried together with the mummies. The pendants look like tongues, with two of them being larger and the third being very small.
Dead must stand before Osiris
In ancient Egypt, people had a custom of packing gold foil “tongues” into their tombs. Because they wanted the deceased to be able to communicate with the god of the dead, Osiris, in the afterlife. He was generally regarded as the ruler of the underworld. If you wanted to secure a comfortable place in the afterlife, you had to answer questions and stand up to the head of the court of the dead, Osiris.
Researchers made a similar discovery of gold tongues in February 2021 in Alexandria, as scinexx reports. An approximately 2,000-year-old mummy with a golden tongue was unearthed. *FR is an offer from IPPEN.Media.
