In Russia, a chess robot injured a little boy so badly that he had to be hospitalized – the parents are checking a complaint.

Moscow – Curious reports from all over the world reach people every day via social media. Just a few weeks ago, a video revealed that US researchers were killing spiders and converting them into gripper arms – sounds like science fiction, but it’s reality. Just like a video from Russia showing a boy who injured his finger so badly during a chess game that he had to be taken to a clinic.

Video on Twitter shows robot breaking boy’s finger

The culprit isn’t an overturned table or a broken chair, but the robot the boy played against. From July 13 to 21, 2022, the “Moscow Chess Open” took place in Moscow, a chess tournament in which robots also took part. A video on Twitter shows how the match human vs. chess robot works. Surrounded by three tables is a gripper arm that moves the chess pieces on the individual boards.

When it’s the human’s turn, the gripper arm is up or on another board. But in the case of the boy, a serious accident happened at one of the tables, which was first reported by the Baza news agency and later by the t3n news portal. The agency shared the video of the incident on Telegram, and it is now also available on Twitter. In the video you can clearly see that the boy moves his piece before the robot has finished its move.

Moscow Chess Federation Confirms Boy’s Finger Broken by Robot

A serious mistake, as the next few seconds in the video show. The boy’s too quick reaction apparently confused the chess robot so much that it grabbed one of the boy’s fingers, crushed it and didn’t want to let go. Passers-by, but also employees of the chess tournament rushed over and after a few seconds managed to free the boy’s finger from the robot gripper.

According to t3n , the President of the Moscow Chess Federation, Sergey Lazarev, confirmed the accident to the Baza news agency. “The robot broke the child’s finger – that’s bad, of course.” The Moscow Chess Federation says the robot was rented for the tournament and should have been looked after by specialists, so that accidents of this kind could not have happened.

Boy has to go to the clinic after an accident: Facebook user wishes “get well soon”

According to reports from PC Gamer , after a hospital stay, the boy was even able to finish the chess tournament, albeit with a cast on his arm. The story does not end there, however, because according to reports from t3n , the boy’s parents now want to check whether they can take legal action against the association. The Baza news agency reports that the parents probably want to contact the local prosecutor’s office.

There has never been such an incident in the association itself. Sergey Smagin, a deputy from the Moscow Union, said that such an accident was the first in his memory. The fact that it happened nonetheless shocked many. On Facebook, a user believes it was no coincidence. “The computer thought, if I break the boy’s fingers, I’ll still win the game,” he writes. Another user is less mean, he continues to wish the boy “get well soon”.
