An unusual miss election in Israel: an 86-year-old who survived the Holocaust is chosen. She is one of ten finalists.

Tel Aviv – Salina Steinfeld from the Israeli coastal city of Haifa was named “Miss Holocaust Survivor 2021” at the age of 86.

“We have to be strong everywhere to know how we can take care of ourselves – and most importantly, to help each other,” said Steinfeld after the election in Jerusalem, as the organizers announced on Wednesday. “Don’t leave unhappy people alone.” The elderly woman visits other Holocaust survivors at least once a week as a volunteer, despite her old age.

According to the organizer Jad Eser Lachaver from Haifa as the organizer, there were several hundred applicants for the election, ten finalists were selected from them. In the election, viewers could also have taken part in an online voting.

The aim of the unusual Miss election is “to bring joy to the heroines who survived the Holocaust,” it said in a press release. The last election for “Miss Holocaust Survivor” took place in 2018 because of the corona pandemic. dpa
