Slapstick in "Help, I've shrunk my friends"

With “Help, I’ve shrunk my teacher”, Felix and his friends wowed the cinema audience for the first time in 2015. Now the family film series is coming to an end.

Hamburg – People who have suddenly shrunk are not new to the cinema. As early as 1989, Rick Moranis accidentally let his children grow up.

The German version of this idea has now been continued again. With “Help, I’ve shrunk my friends”, the third adventure about the student Felix and his friends is now coming to the cinemas. After first his teacher and then his parents caused a stir in the first two parts as miniature editions, the eighth grader shrinks his joy in the latest adventure.

The squad around Felix (Oskar Keymer) and Ella (Lina Hüesker) has meanwhile reached puberty. And that includes being in love for the first time. Stupidly, Ella wants to reveal her tender feelings to Felix just at the point when he meets the new classmate Melanie (Lorna zu Solms) and is immediately fascinated.

What he doesn’t know: The new one is up to something. The former school director Hulda (Andrea Sawatzki) also has evil in her mind and wants to challenge the spirit of the school spirit Otto Leonhard (Otto Waalkes) for it. He expresses his thoughts on paintings and speaks to Felix about a bust to teach him how to shrink. With this magic trick the pupil is supposed to protect Leonhard’s treasures. But a lot goes wrong on the school trip to Leonhard’s birthplace.

The family film is about first love, eternal life, family life and the value of friendship. However, he sometimes seems a little undecided whether he is aimed at younger children or teenagers. The slapstick elements are in many places too exaggerated for a film that actually has the cooler youngsters as its target group.

Under-ten-year-olds, on the other hand, might like this sense of humor, but may have difficulty identifying with the much older leading actors. With the first edition of the trilogy, which ran in cinemas in 2015, it naturally went a lot better together. As it is, however, the jokes have got stuck in their infancy in some places, while the main characters have continued to grow.

The film by Granz Henman is the conclusion of the film series. According to production figures, the first two parts were viewed by more than 2.2 million people in the cinema in Germany and Austria. You don’t have to see the first two parts for the third film. But if you know them, you can look forward to the same leading actors.

Anja Kling played the slipped, slightly next to her headmaster again, and Axel Stein again played Felix’s father, who was not to be taken very seriously. When he is looking forward to the school trip like a snow king, throws his mix tape on the bus on CD and Haddaway roars out of the speakers with “What is Love”, the parents in the cinema should also have something to laugh about. dpa
