Snapdragon 855, the most powerful chipset in the world?

Snapdragon 855 is the most advanced chipset in the world, already prepared for the new networks and 5G devices that will begin to be deployed next year in some countries. Spain, for the moment, will have to settle for pilot tests or experimental projects, until the first commercial networks can be built from 2020. The new processor, according to Qualcomm, “will mark the beginning of a new decade of revolutionary mobile devices, with experiences superior to the current ones in terms of images, audio, games and mixed reality, all thanks to the new artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities that they incorporate ”.

And one of the first manufacturers to take advantage of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset will be OnePlus. Peter Lau, its president, was also in Hawaii to confirm it. The new smartphone will initially be available with the British operator EE, which will already have 5G in 16 cities in the United Kingdom in 2019. The first in which the OnePlus smart terminal with 5G capabilities will be able to be used will be London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham and Manchester.

Also China Mobile and other Chinese manufacturers such as Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo and ZTE are developing 5G mobile devices that incorporate the Qualcomm Snapdragon mobile platform, the first in the world that jointly supports multi-gigabit 5G, artificial intelligence and immersive extended reality (XR). At the China Mobile Global Partner Conference in Guangzhou, Qualcomm Technologies and Chinese equipment manufacturers will jointly present demos of 5G mobile devices, including smartphones, representing an important step in accelerating the commercialization of 5G.

Characteristics

The Snapdragon 855 chipset features a fourth generation AI engine, offering a total capacity of more than 7 trillion operations per second, and triples the performance of the previous generation mobile platform. The Adreno Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) hardware that integrates Snapdragon 855 improves AI acceleration, enabling 50% more arithmetic logical units and new instructions to further accelerate AI performance. Snapdragon 855 also brings a more advanced voice assistant, with echo cancellation and noise suppression, so users can talk to their voice assistant at any time.

Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 855 platform sets new standards for capturing cutting-edge computational photos and videos. The user can capture a video and accurately replace selected objects or backgrounds in the scene in real time with 4K HDR resolution using over 1 billion color tones. Also for entertainment, the new chipset offers consumers an improved gaming experience for the most realistic and demanding games, which will run smoother with custom algorithms designed to reduce frames. Multiplayer games are further enhanced by reducing latencies.

Volumetric virtual reality (VR) immersive video experience and 8K resolutions are other new capabilities of Snapdragon 855 , giving users maximum freedom to watch, learn, play and share dynamic experiences in real time, making thus even more blurred the lines between the physical and virtual worlds.

Finally, the new chipset incorporates the Qualcomm 3D Sonic sensor, the first standard commercial solution – compared to other Huawei, OnePlus or Xiaomi owners that already exist on the market – of the world’s ultrasonic fingerprint supported under the screen, which can detect with fingerprint security and precision and enabling new form factors or cutting-edge smartphone designs.
