A system developed in the Science Park of the University of Valencia makes it possible to automatically convert three-dimensional stereoscopic images to autostereoscopic ones , which allows the visualization of three-dimensional images with the naked eye , without the need to use special glasses. Its first beneficiaries will be museums, publicists, film and video producers and manufacturers of the audiovisual sector. And within a year it is expected to have hardware that will allow home 3D television without glasses .
Starting from the calculation of the depth in the pair of images provided by the stereoscopic format -used in 3D movies and TV channels-, the technique builds a 3D model of the scene and calculates the additional views necessary for autostereoscopy (up to eight o nine) as if virtual photographs were taken of said scene, from different angles, simulating what the eyes would see from any position.
The company Mirage Technologies, the start-up responsible for the development of the new technology, assures that it will allow to take advantage of the existing 3D contents in the market to be reproduced in multiview format, which will give access to 3D television without glasses in the very short term. homes. In addition, the system offers business possibilities in theaudiovisual sector, but also in the field ofmuseum, since “allows to displayvirtual reconstructions of parts that cannot be shown to the public“, explains Salvador Bayarri, who adds that” the possibility of 3D becoming widespread will only be achieved by eliminating the glasses. “
Marketing of this technology for professional use has already begun and the system will be applied shortly to show the public the process of dismantling, by ENRESA, the Zorita Nuclear Power Plant (Guadalajara) and its conversion into an interpretation center for the It was the first Spanish nuclear power plant (1968). This autostereoscopic screen system will also be used by theNational Energy Museum, in Ponferrada, to show theenergy generation processes in the Sun.
