Strains Threaten End of UK Restrictions in June: "It's a date written in pencil"

The British Health Minister, Matt Hancock , confirmed this Sunday that the Government is openly contemplating the possibility of postponing the reopening date scheduled for June 21 given the rebound in cases caused by the coronavirus strains.

“At the moment it is a date marked in pencil,” Hancock indicated before indicating that the social distancing measures could continue beyond the final phase of reopening drawn up by the authorities, as he told the BBC network. “If the postponement is what has to happen because the data are getting worse, we are completely willing to do it,” said the British minister.

Experts such as the epidemiologist of the University of London Anne Johnson or the president of the Academy of Medical Sciences, Trevor Phillips, have been categorically against exercising any kind of haste in the reopening of the country after the more than 5,300 new cases registered in the last hours, which represent a substantial increase in relation to the infections of last week.

In fact, the advisor to the British Government, Stephen Reicher , has warned that the execution of the next reopening measures would be “reckless” and would represent “a serious risk to the population”, according to comments collected by ‘The Guardian’.

Cases go up, deaths go down

The United Kingdom has registered 5,341 positive cases of coronavirus this Sunday and four new deaths, according to data reported by the Ministry of Health. The cases represent a special concern if compared especially with those registered last Sunday, 3,111, that is, 2,101 infections less than the figure for this Sunday.

While daily deaths have decreased by 1% in the last seven days, the number of cases has increased by 11,022 (49%) in the same period.

In general terms, the country has registered an approximate total of 127,000 deaths and 4.5 million infections. About 130 patients are on assisted respiration.

Finally, in the vaccinations section, more than 40 million people have received the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine while 27.6 have received the full treatment.
