The eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano is leaving a bleak panorama on the island of La Palma. According to a recent study carried out by the United States Smithsonian’s Global Volcanology Program, there are 1,359 active volcanoes worldwide , and this 2021 there have been around 70 eruptions. For his part, associate professor Martin DaniÃk, lead author of the John de Laeter Center at Curtin University (Australia), points out that “supervolcanoes” erupt several times at intervals of tens of thousands of years , but until date it was impossible to determine what happens during periods of inactivity.
