The daughter moves out into life, but the father cannot cope with it at all. After Spencer Tracy and Steve Martin, it’s now Andy Garcia’s turn.
Berlin – Fathers who have difficulties letting their own daughter out into life and who are at odds with their future son-in-law – such fathers can be sure of not just little attention in the cinema.
It all started in 1950: Spencer Tracy was the father, Elizabeth Taylor the daughter, and a lot went wrong in the well-known US comedy “Father of the Bride”. In 1961 there was a 30-part series on American television under the same title. A theatrical remake was then launched in 1991; Steve Martin, Diane Keaton and Kimberly Williams starred. And again, Dad was anything but amused. And now, more than 70 years after the original, it continues with a new adaptation of the seemingly indestructible material.
And she proposed
Father of the Bride, 2022, features Andy Garcia (the new doubting father), Adria Arjona as daughter and Gloria Estefan as mother. Daughter Sofia comes home to tell her parents that she wants to get married. But her Cuban-American father Billy doesn’t like it at all. He also reacted with complete dismay to the information that she, his daughter, had proposed and not the guy (“Is anyone doing that?”).
In addition, not everything is going well between Billy and his wife Ingrid. So a marriage counselor is needed. But it is very questionable whether Billy and Ingrid will ever be able to get closer again. In any case, chaos and despair are inevitable in this new edition.
The almost two-hour US production was directed by Mexican-born Gary Alazraki. All three “Father of the Bride” films ultimately go back to a 1949 novel of the same name.
