The first gray hair: what now?

Oh no, a gray hair! Few take the graying out from the start. These are the possibilities to deal with the graying – from concealing to proud acceptance.

Worms / Aachen – Sooner or later we all have it: gray hair. Some get them in their mid-20s, others only from 40. Whenever the time comes, very few want to wear gray straight away. Tips on how to deal with it.

Slow it down:

There are so-called anti-gray lotions for the scalp. Stylist Jens Dagné from the Intercoiffure Mondial hairdressing association recommends this to his customers when they see the first gray threads in their hair. The lotions protect “against further rapid depigmentation of the hair and reactivate new pigments at the hair roots.” The first successes are visible after about three months. Anti-gray shampoos promise a similar effect.

Laminating:

In the beginning, people like to conceal. “An intensive tint covers the first gray hair and lasts about ten to 15 washes,” says Antonio Weinitschke from the Central Association of the German Hairdressing Trade. The alternative are strands in your hair. Its use puts the least strain on the scalp compared to other dyeing methods, as there is a film between it and the hair.

With gray, strands also have an optical advantage, especially with darker hair. Since they are one or two tones lighter than natural hair color, single shimmering gray in darker hair is not so noticeable, explains Weinitschke. And compared to tinting the whole hair, strands can be set in several color nuances – even the hair in its natural state never has just one, but many nuances.

Over-dyeing:

“Coloring only makes sense if there is a lot more gray hair,” says Weinitschke. Compared to a tint, a color penetrates deeply into the hair structure and thus lasts longer.

Even if you can dye your hair in almost any color, it should still match your own skin tone. And it gets paler with age. “The older the customer, the lighter the hair color should be,” advises Jens Dagné. Light and soft tones are a soft focus for wrinkled skin. “Dark colors often make us look older than we already are – and women are tied to heavier make-up,” says the master hairdresser.

The disadvantage of dyeing: the regrowing approach. After four to six weeks, his customers come for re-dyeing, according to master hairdresser Weinitschke. His solution: “With the so-called weaving technique, the transition cannot be seen so intensely.”

With this method, small strands are separated with a comb and only these are colored – – the wave-like movement is reminiscent of weaving, hence the name of the method. The rest of the hair stays as it is.

Stand by the gray and care for it appropriately:

The gray is part of the age and therefore simply part of our life. And you should be able to show that too. Especially since: gray and white – whether natural or even colored – have long been in fashion. Even supermodels show themselves on the catwalks. And the fashion magazine “Vogue” recently wrote: “Gray hair is a hairstyle trend and a classic of the future”

According to hairdressers, anti-gray shampoos can slow down the first graying process a little.

However, gray hair needs different care to look beautiful. Sun exposure and other environmental influences often give them a yellow tinge, says Weinitschke. In addition, unpigmented hair is more stubborn than natural hair. With longer hair, this can mean a lot of maintenance.

The master hairdresser therefore recommends good care with special silver shampoos and appropriate conditioners. They contain silver pigments that counteract the yellow tinge. dpa
