The Hot Sale reduced the fear of buying online

Although fraud is an element that lives as an obstacle to electronic commerce and its elimination is very complex, events such as the Hot Sale have contributed to Mexican e-commerce so that people lose their fear of making purchases online, because in the edition of the In 2021, only 7% expressed fear when putting their card on the internet, while a couple of years ago this figure was above 12%.

These data from the Mexican Association for Online Sales (AMVO) are relevant for fraud protection companies, such as Clearsale, as they mark an important part of the evolution that electronic commerce has had in the country as a result of the pandemic, in addition to the fact that this it will continue to develop in the future.

“People lost their fear of doing things online, because at the beginning they were forced to do so,” says Víctor Islas, CEO of Clearsale Latin America. “So increasingly reducing this number of fearful people is great news for the industry.”

Figures like this also contribute to the understanding that the sales volume of the Hot Sale 2021 will not fall dramatically, since the decrease in relation to the previous year was 8%.

According to Islas, “these data show that the e-commerce industry is in a process of transforming consumer behavior, starting from increasing trust in each of the chain’s actors.”

And it is that although during the high sales seasons fraud increases, the specialist highlights that in this edition the sales levels were not exceeded, since the growth for a business in just one day of the Hot Sale was 24%, compared to a regular one, while fraud intent growth was below 10%.

On the other hand, Clearsale announced that the categories where more fraud attempts were suffered were running shoes from Adidas and Nike, as well as wireless headphones, as they are items highly desired by people and easy to resell through platforms. online.

In this sense, another relevant data is that of the states with the highest number of fraud attempts, among which entities such as Jalisco, Sinaloa, Michoacán or Guanajuato were located.

According to Islas, the growth of this phenomenon is related to the incidence of other types of criminal activities. “When violence increases in a state, criminals feel more protected and feel that there is more impunity for carrying out electronic crimes,” explains the specialist.

Therefore, companies and businesses must pay special attention to improving technology to detect in detail the postal codes or IP addresses where abnormal activity is being generated in terms of fraud. This implies sectorizing regions to detect the origin of fraud and stigmatizing a region in general, which would negatively impact businesses.

According to the AMVO, another reason why more was not bought during this time was that 6% of people had problems with their payment method, one of the most common was to suffer from rejections by businesses, which which causes customers not to return.

Faced with these issues related to customer experience, concludes the specialist, it is necessary to learn from the most important players in the industry, such as Amazon, Mercado Libre or Walmart, who do not hand over their payment and fraud processes to third parties, but rather “have their own strategies to take care of their safety ”.
