The old and disheveled Doc claimed that “if you’re going to do something, better do it with style” and Robert Zemeckis strictly fulfilled the command of one of his most memorable and beloved characters. In 1989 , and after the success of ‘ Back to the Future ‘ (1985), the Chicago-born director turned Marty McFly’s life upside down and pushed him on a new adventure through time accompanied by Doc and riding the already mythical DeLorean. With this second part, Zemeckis went from rebuilding the world of 1955 to imagining what wonders and incredible technological advances the future of October 21, 2015 held for us .
The futuristic fever that infected Hollywood like a pandemic during the 70s and 80s left us with amusing and varied visions of what humanity could bring, ranging from ideal hypertechnological societies to post-apocalyptic worlds typical of an Orwellian dystopia. The future is a blank canvas full of uncertainty and whose possibilities are limited only by the imagination of the creator.
Any moviegoer who has hit 100 mph will remember the colorful and amazing Hill Valley that Marty and Jennifer encountered when they hit 2015. The tech bubble was swelling in 1989 and the pace at which things were moving seemed to point to that, in just twenty years, we would not have to step on the ground or tie our shoelaces. Zemeckis designed a version that, luckily or unfortunately, did not meet expectations when the moment of truth arrived. On October 21, 2015, many fans of the trilogy lamented that we were still without a Hover Board .
But human ingenuity is an inexhaustible source of surprises. Perhaps due to a certain geek pride or to make this world a little more magical, the truth is that many of the inventions that we discovered with Marty have ended up becoming a reality . Science fiction has turned out to be an inspiration rather than a productive one for technological development. With more or less differences, these are the inventions that ‘ Back to the Future II ‘ predicted and that we have ended up enjoying in real life.
