Even if we think of super-giant stars like UY Scuti that could hold more than 1,700 suns like ours – even if it’s only 30 times more massive – we can still find something even more impressive. And no, it is not a supermassive black hole. The largest supermassive black hole is about 21 billion times the mass of the Sun , and is located in the Coma cluster.
What then is the largest object in the universe?
We have to go a little further and get closer to galaxies, specifically to clusters of galaxies, which are gravitationally linked together in groups, as in our case the Milky Way that belongs to the small Local Group , where we find only about two dozen of galaxies.
But clusters of galaxies can in turn be connected by gravitational attractions and forming a supercluster. And here we come to the end of the road, for now. The largest known supercluster in the universe is the Great Wall of Hercules-Corona Borealis, a supercluster discovered in 2013 thanks to X-ray bursts that precisely pointed in the direction of the constellation Hercules and Corona Borealis.
This supercluster of galaxies appears to be 10 billion light years across , placing it very close to the known length of the Universe, about 13.7 billion light years. Its colossal size makes it defy the laws of cosmology since matter on large scales must be uniformly distributed in the universe.
