The Ministry of Tourism foresees an economic benefit of 146,886 million dollars in 2022

The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur), Miguel Torruco Marqués, announced the forecast that is expected for this sector for this 2022 in which an economic spill of more than 146,000 million dollars is expected, which represents 12% more than in 2021.

Regarding the arrival of international tourists to Mexico, the federal official estimates an arrival of 40 million 37,000, that is, 8.2 million more than last year, an increase of 25.6%.

The head of the Sectur pointed out that in terms of foreign exchange income from international visitors, it is expected to reach 24 thousand 250 million dollars, this is 4,456 million more than in 2021, an increase of 22.5%.

Hotel occupancy and foreign exchange expectations in Mexico derived from Tourism

An average annual hotel occupancy of 54.3% is estimated, standing 12.9 percentage points above last year, according to what was estimated by the Sectur in a statement.

Regarding the extra hotel offer, through digital platforms, the forecast is that in 2022 11 million spaces will be offered, which means an additional 2.7%.

Regarding tourist consumption by lodging, which represents the total spending of nationals and foreigners, it will be 13,374 million dollars, this is 16.5% more than in 2021.

Likewise, an average expenditure by international visitors of 379.8 dollars is estimated, which results in an increase of 6.1% compared to 2021. All this in what the agency described as a “conservative scenario”.

Miguel Torruco Marqués recalled that the participation of Tourism GDP in the national economy decreased 1.9 percentage points, going from 8.6% to 6.7%, in the years 2019 and 2020, respectively.

The tourism sector is one of the sectors hardest hit by the health crisis resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, which is why these expectations, together with the results of the Tourism Satellite Account, will be published in December this year.

With the presentation of these data, it is expected that the participation of the Tourism GDP in the National GDP will improve, reaching 7.1% in the national economy, and by the end of this 2022, the participation will be resumed above 8.3%, only three tenths below 2019.
