Based on a new model that applies quantum correction terms to supplement Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity, the universe may not have had a beginning and therefore existed forever.
According to scientific estimates, our universe is 13,800 million years old and at its origin, everything that exists must have occupied what is known as a singularity or a single point of origin of enormous density; after this, the Big Bang expanded this singularity and caused the official birth of it. But science, more specifically mathematics, is unable to predict what happened before the singularity .
“The singularity of the Big Bang is the most serious problem in general relativity, because the laws of physics seem to break down there “, explains to the journal Physics Letters B Ahmed Farag Ali, from the University of Benha (Egypt) and co-author of the study.
This crossroads seems to have been resolved thanks to a new model that exposes that the universe has neither beginning nor end . His work is based on the ideas of theoretical physicist David Bohm who explored replacing classical geodesies (the shortest path between two points on a curved surface) with quantum trajectories. Using the quantum corrected Raychaudhuri equation, the new quantum equation describes the expansion and evolution of the universe in which the Big Bang singularity does not appear .
The universe thus appears as a container of quantum fluid and this liquid could be composed of hypothetical particles called gravitons, without mass, which mediate the force of gravity. Furthermore, these quantum corrections would be a cosmological constant and, therefore, dark energy would not have to exist. The universe would have a finite size but an infinite age .
