Methuselah, an old star dated 14.46 billion years ago has led us to redefine the age of our universe . According to a new study published in the International Journal of Exergy , the universe is older than previously thought, since the dating of this ancient star is earlier than the estimated date for our cosmos: 13,817 million years.
The star, HD 140283 or "Methuselah star", is 190 light years from Earth in the constellation of Libra and the estimate of its age has stunned the scientific community. Methuselah is a subgiant star, discovered a century ago and whose composition, very poor in metals, was posed as a "rare bird" .
According to the new research, estimating the age of this star makes it one of the oldest known stellar objects in the universe . Regarding this, scientists have used the Radiation Model of the Universe (RUM) to calculate the age of the universe. The final result has been: 14,885 +/- 0.040 billion years , a figure slightly higher than the initial estimate.
