Among all the mysterious phenomena that occur in the Universe, high-energy cosmic rays are one of the most puzzling to scientists. These "rays" are actually very energetic particles entering the Earth's atmosphere at a speed close to the speed of light , coming from somewhere in the Universe. Now, a team of researchers from the Pierre Auger International Observatory in Argentina claims to have found its origin in galaxies with active nuclei fed by black holes . The magnetic fields of black holes would be responsible for the great acceleration of these energy rays.
"The significance of the finding is that a new scientific discipline begins, which is charged particle astronomy, " said Carlos Rey, vice president of the National Atomic Energy Commission of Argentina.
