King Charles and Meghan Markle hit it off before the royal couple left. His nickname for her speaks volumes. It was an expression of his appreciation at the time.
London – At her dream wedding in May 2018, Meghan Markle (41) was led to the altar by King Charles (73), side by side, the two showed themselves full of affection in front of the camera. The nickname that the then heir to the throne gave his daughter-in-law about two years before the death of Queen Elizabeth II (96, † 2022), as a book now reveals, also testifies to this intimate familiarity.
Charles III gave Meghan a nickname that expressed his highest regard
Royal expert Katie Nicholl reveals in her book “The New Royals” that the British monarch called the Duchess of Sussex “tungsten”, a heavy metal of high density in the periodic table. At first glance, the element, which is also popular as a man’s name, appears brittle like the metal itself when it comes into contact with impurities. But Charles used the “pet name” as an expression of his high respect for his son’s wife Prince Harry (38).
Tungsten is very resistant and, among other things, has the highest normal boiling point of all elements at 5,555 degrees Celsius. With the choice of this unique nickname, Charles III. express that Duchess Meghan is tough and inflexible. The regent is said to have expressed his great respect for Meghan’s resilient nature.
Tungsten in chemistry
Tungsten is a chemical element with the element symbol W and the atomic number 74. It is one of the transition metals, in the periodic table it is in the 6th subgroup (group 6) or chromium group. Tungsten is a high-density, shiny white heavy metal that becomes brittle even with very small amounts of contamination. It is the chemical element with the highest melting and boiling point. Its best-known use is therefore the filament in incandescent lamps.
Meghan’s presence was the “wake-up call” for the now-Prince and Princess of Wales
Nicholl explains that Markle’s nickname apparently came about when the ‘Suits’ actress was at her best during her and Prince Harry’s performance at the 2018 Royal Foundation Forum alongside Prince William, 40, and Princess Kate, 40. “According to one advisor, this was when William and Kate, who was heavily pregnant, realized they needed to up their game,” Nicholls continues. In the same work, however, she also states that Meghan’s tone aroused the Queen’s displeasure.
Kate and William conformed but wanted to be more than “pet royals,” but Meghan outshone them all, Nicholls assesses the situation. “But Meghan was the standout star of the foursome. She was polished, passionate and funny, using all of her TV-savvy skills to present her case. It was a wake-up call for William and Kate as they realized Meghan was very impressive, very confident and very capable, according to a source,” reads the book about Meghan Markle’s stature that inspired Charles’ idiosyncratic moniker.
