A decision as a beating for the unvaccinated

Continued payment of wages in the event of illness is a matter of course for all of us. When one social law after another came into force under Bismarck, the main concern of the government at the time was to take the wind out of the sails of the growing social democracy. The law on the health insurance of workers of 1883 guaranteed the insured free medical treatment and for a maximum of thirteen weeks sick pay from the third day of illness.

The law has been modified many times over the past 138 years; in particular, continued payment of wages is now limited to a period of six weeks. And: If an employee is responsible for his incapacity to work, the entitlement to continued payment of wages does not apply.

What does self-inflicted mean?

But what does “self-inflicted” mean? Injured while hang-gliding, motorcycle racing, playing football, doing dangerous sports – is it your own fault? Crossed the pedestrian crossing when it was red and hit it – your own fault? Sexually ill because of unprotected intercourse – your own fault? Fallen off the bar stool while drunk – is it your own fault? Unable to work due to cosmetic surgery, fertility treatments, chain smoking – your own fault?

According to previous jurisprudence, an employee can treat his health as he sees fit. You can smoke unrestrainedly, you don’t have to be vaccinated, and you can eat and drink whatever and as much you want. The bar for the loss of wages in the event of illness was and is very high. At least until now.

Quarantine, however, is a special case, because those affected are not sick at all. They have to stay at home because they have had contact with sick people. The continued payment of wages in the quarantine case is therefore borne by the state, not by employers, not by health insurance companies.

The federal states have had to pay more than 600 million euros for this so far. They don’t want that anymore. “Anyone who takes the liberty not to be vaccinated, although there is nothing medically against it, is responsible for the consequences themselves – not the solidarity community,” says the North Rhine-Westphalian Health Minister Karl-Josef Laumann, say the employers’ associations, say the CDU in unison, SPD, Greens, FDP, even the Left. This decision will force those affected to conceal their test results, because the economic threat affects their existence. This will create a hidden pandemic niche, an uncontrollable one on top of that.

This decision is not only counterproductive, it is also a multiple scandal. First, this will further increase the pressure on non-vaccinated people. This is compulsory vaccination through the back door. You shouldn’t be afraid of this vaccination, you shouldn’t worry about this new technology, you shouldn’t worry about possible long-term consequences. To vaccinate or not: this is now a political decision, not a medical one.

What is solidarity?

Second, the principle of guilt is made socially acceptable again. The fact that you can shape your life as you see fit no longer applies. The panic fear of the next wave of the pandemic is being used as an excuse to further dismantle the principle of solidarity. Anyone who does not get vaccinated is by no means automatically lacking in solidarity, harmful to the general public, but maybe just fearful or cautious.

Those who do not get vaccinated can still adhere to all pandemic rules in an exemplary manner and in no way pose a threat to their fellow human beings. That is the third and worst part of this scandal: the division of society into good and bad.
