A transparent and environmentally friendly plane wins the German Lucky Strike Junior Award for the best design of the year.
Christened Oriens , the new two-seater aircraft is equipped with solar panels on the wings and tail that provide enough power to travel long distances without consuming fuel. However, for emergencies, Oriens also has a small fuel tank. It’s even prepared for gliding in optimal conditions.
Every detail of the aircraft’s structure has been carefully studied. For example, to improve aerodynamics, the Oriens wings end with a smooth arc. The “Y” shaped tail allows you to reduce weight without losing any of its functionality. As for the aircraft cabin, it is made of polycarbonate , a synthetic material that can be recycled indefinitely. Its transparency allows occupants to “live intensely the sensation of flying”, according to its creator, engineering student Roland Cernat.
