Attention, trigger warning: In Bremen, a group of young people attacked a trans woman and seriously injured her.

Bremen – A group of young people attacked, insulted and seriously injured a trans woman in a tram in Bremen. The youths then fled, a police spokeswoman said. Just on Friday (September 2nd) a 25-year-old trans man who was beaten up on the sidelines of the Christopher Street Day festival died.

According to the police, the woman from Bremen was on a tram around 7:35 p.m. when a group of ten to 15 young people got on at a stop in the city center. They insulted her as a “fucking tranny” and tore off her wig. A perpetrator, who was estimated by witnesses to be 14 to 16 years old, hit the 57-year-old in the face with both fists.

The other part of the group cheered on the attacker. Only when other passengers intervened did the group let go of her and get off the train. The victim was taken to a hospital with serious facial injuries.

According to the police, the videos of the surveillance camera in the train are evaluated. The state security has now started the investigation, it is said. They are investigating hate crimes and dangerous bodily harm. Witnesses who have heard something, please call the police on 0421/362-3888.

Violence against trans people is increasing drastically

Incidentally, attacks of this kind are not uncommon in Germany. Belltower News reports that violence against trans people has increased dramatically in recent years. For example, the Federal Ministry of the Interior reported 304 transphobic crimes across Germany in 2020 – 35 of which were physical injuries. In 2020 there were 36 percent more attacks than in the previous year.

However, based on these numbers, it is not possible to deduce whether violence against queer people is actually increasing or has become more visible in the meantime. However, the news portal assumes that the number of unreported cases is much higher. Only a small fraction of anti-trans attacks are reported to authorities or classified as such. There are not sufficiently trained officers in the police force in Germany. (mse/epd/dpa)
