Turn your mobile into a chemistry lab

quimica-movil Scientists from the University of Granada have created a computer application that, installed on the mobile phone, allows the concentration of any chemical substance to be analyzed by taking a simple photograph of a sensor test strip that they have also designed. The study is published in the latest issue of the journal Sensors and Actuators B (Chemical) .

The platform consists of two elements. On the one hand, the team has designed the single-use, low-cost colorimetric chemical sensor in the form of a test strip, which changes color depending on the concentration of a certain chemical species that may be present in liquids or gases. At the same time, they have created a computer application for mobile phones, capable of measuring the color that the strip acquires when it comes into contact with the element to be analyzed and, from there, determining whether or not it contains the substance in question and in what concentration.

The system allows you to carry out these analyzes and obtain accurate results without the need to take the photograph at a fixed distance to the test strip, even when the image is not correctly focused or centered, and without the need for chemistry or engineering knowledge. In addition, it is valid for analyzing the composition of different gases and liquids, for example, in water .

Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2022 to the developers of a tool to build molecules

Scientists Carolyn Bertozzi, Morten Meldal and Karl Barry Sharpless have been honored with this prestigious award.

Can life exist based on silicon?

They said in the science fiction movie Star Trek that we are units of carbon. But is it possible that there is another chemical element capable of substituting it? What is the framework of the molecules of life?

Nitric oxide: a molecule with a thousand faces

Until the end of the 20th century, nitric oxide was only of interest as an environmental pollutant, becoming the molecule of the year for its fundamental biological value.

They discover a mineral that can 'remember' like a human

No other material that we know of behaves in this way. Could this component have a brain?
