Terrible news from near Aachen: Two boys died after a swimming accident in a lake. Not much is known about the circumstances.

Simmerath – Two children died after a swimming accident in Simmerath near Aachen in North Rhine-Westphalia. A police spokeswoman said on Friday morning.

According to the police, the seven and nine-year-old boys were reported missing early Thursday evening at the Eiserbachsee in the Rursee center and were then found lifeless in the water a little later. Although the two boys were initially resuscitated, they subsequently died in hospitals. How the accident happened is still part of the investigation, the spokeswoman said.

From January to July, 30 people have drowned in North Rhine-Westphalia, 14 more than in the first seven months of the previous year. According to the German Life Saving Society (DLRG), 14 people drowned in rivers, 10 in lakes and 2 in a canal. The other victims died in a stream, in a pool, in a swimming pool or in a pond.

According to DLRG figures, the number of people who drowned in Germany rose by 15 to at least 199 from January to July compared to the previous year. According to the DLRG, the majority of accidents occur inland in mostly unguarded waters. dpa
