They face life imprisonment – in Australia, two Germans were caught with ten kilograms of methamphetamine. Both had entered the country from Zimbabwe.

Sydney – Two Germans have been charged with smuggling a large quantity of drugs in Australia. The man and woman (both 69 years old) landed at Sydney Airport on July 4 from Zimbabwe, Africa, the Australian National Police said on Wednesday. There, a search of their luggage discovered ten kilograms of methamphetamine hidden in the lining of two suitcases. The two Germans were then accused of illegally importing a “commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug,” police said.

The two were due to appear in a Sydney court on Wednesday. The maximum penalty for the offense is life imprisonment. Authorities are trying to determine where the methamphetamine originally came from. “The likelihood of two people alone being able to obtain a commercial quantity of methamphetamine is small – organized crime syndicates are often behind such imports,” a police spokesman said. No further details about the two suspects were released. dpa
