Violence at Swedish school: two women dead

The headmaster speaks of “deadly violence”, the police initially of an allegedly serious crime – a short time later the sad certainty follows: two women died in an attack in Malmö.

Malmö – Two women have been killed in a violent act at a high school in Malmö, Sweden. The two were employed at the school and died as a result of the violence inflicted on them, the responsible police said.

They were therefore between 50 and 60 years old. An 18-year-old student was arrested on suspicion of murder. The background to the crime remained unclear until late at night. The police initially reported in the late afternoon that they were dealing with a suspected serious crime. However, what exactly happened in the school in the center of the city remained unclear.

Media: Perpetrator armed with ax and knife

Two people – apparently the two women – were taken to hospital after the incident, while a third person was arrested. Police believe it was a lone gunman. According to information from the newspaper Aftonbladet, he is said to have been armed with an ax and a knife.

According to the broadcaster SVT, students were in the building late at night to prepare a musical. The principal of the high school, who was in Gothenburg a good 250 kilometers further north at the time, told Aftonbladet that he only knew that “deadly violence” was going on in the school. The police later reported that the situation was under control. She spoke of around 50 people who were on the school grounds at the time of the crime.

Sweden has been dealing with rampant gang crime for a long time. In the course of this, there are repeated shots and deliberately caused explosions in the large and sometimes also in smaller cities of the country. Malmö has been aware of the problem of criminal gangs longer than other parts of the country and has taken several measures and programs to counteract it. The Rosengård district of Malmö in particular – the home of the Swedish soccer star Zlatan Ibrahimovic – is considered a problem area. However, the school is located in a different part of Malmo not far from the old town. So far there have been no signs of a connection between the incident and the criminal milieu. dpa
