Volaris records losses in the first quarter due to the rise in fuel prices and new cases of Covid-19

After three consecutive quarters of recording profits, Volaris stumbled in the first three months of the year with a net loss of 49 million dollars (mdd), in an environment that, although it continues with a high demand for flights, has also seen increases in key costs, such as fuel.

The airline’s operating income stood at 567 million dollars, an increase of 80% compared to 2021. In addition, the Profit Before Financing, Taxes, Depreciation, Amortization and Rents (EBITDAR) was 97 million dollars, an increase of 52% with an EBITDA margin of 17.0%, reported the company in its report for the first quarter of the year sent to the Mexican Stock Exchange.

“The year 2022 began with a strong increase in the price of fuel and a new increase in cases of Covid-19. However, demand continues to be strong, and we are seeing fewer and fewer disturbances due to new cases of Covid-19,” he said. Although Volaris had started 2021 with a net loss of 733 million pesos (mdp), for the second and third quarters of last year it had profits of 1,538 mdp and 1,515 mdp, respectively.

Although in the fourth quarter it had a loss of 200 million pesos, the company explained that this was due to a single and non-monetary accounting charge of 2,251 million pesos, which, when excluded from the financial results, yielded a net profit of 1,559 million pesos.

Volaris transported 7 million passengers in the period, an increase of 64% compared to 2019. Domestic and international passengers increased 58% and 95%, respectively, while total capacity measured in available seat miles (ASM). acronym in English) increased 50%.
