Have you ever yelled “SIU(UUU)” when something incredibly good happened? The question is probably wrong, as the target group is more familiar with the choice of the “youth word”.

Stuttgart – There are still around two months to choose the “Youth Word of the Year”. Until September 13, everyone can choose from the top ten on the website “langenscheidt.com/jugendwort-des- Jahres”. The last round with three finalists will then run until October 18th. The “Jugendwort 2022” is to be chosen on October 25th. Last year it became “cringe”: The term describes something embarrassing or unpleasant and prevailed in the Langenscheidt-Verlag voting with 42 percent of the votes.

This year’s terms include gommemode (infinitely strong, invincible), slay (when someone looks confident, acts confident, or does or achieves something spectacular), and wild/wyld (fierce, crass). Selection. According to the Stuttgart publisher, “Smash” comes from the game “Smash or Pass” and means something like: starting something with someone. “Sus” in turn stands for suspect, suspicious and comes from the game “Among Us”.

First trends already recognizable

You can also vote for the exclamation “SIU(UUU)” when something incredibly good or cool is happening, or for “Bre”/”Bro”/”Brother” which designates a mate/boyfriend/girlfriend. “Digga”/”Diggah” as a designation for a buddy, boyfriend or girlfriend also goes in this direction. The candidates “doer” (someone who implements things without hesitation) and “bottomless” (bad, lousy, unbelievable) might sound more common.

According to the information, more than 200,000 votes have already been received by the publisher since Tuesday last week. Around 30,000 are added every day. The first trends can also be identified. However, because these could change quickly, the company did not reveal anything.

The “Youth Word of the Year” has been chosen since 2008. At that time, “rotten meat party” was chosen as a synonym for an over-30 party. A year later followed “hartzen” for (senseless) hanging around. It was sometimes criticized that the winning words were largely unknown even in the young target group – for example in the case of the winner from 2015: “Smombie” – a combination of smartphone and zombie. It is intended to describe someone who no longer notices anything about their surroundings because they only stare at their smartphone. dpa
