Weather in Germany: cold front is coming – strong thunderstorms expected in many places at night

Update from August 4, 4:35 p.m .: The announced cold front will move from the north-west to Germany in the coming hours. According to the DWD, the current heat will end in the afternoon with initially isolated, strong thunderstorms. Wind gusts of up to 85 km/h and local storms with heavy rain of up to 30 l/sqm are expected. Hail is also possible, the grains can have a circumference of two centimeters. There will be thunderstorms during the night, heavy precipitation is expected, especially in the Eifel. There is a local risk of severe weather from heavy rain, hail and heavy gusts of wind.

Weather in Germany: DWD warns of strong thunderstorms on Friday – extreme heat over for the time being

Update from August 4th, 3.40 p.m .: The second half of Thursday does not let the thermometer go down. As the DWD is now reporting, the weekend will bring a significant cooling off – the heavy sweating in some parts of Germany will end on Friday.

An approaching cold front brought the northwest a drop in temperature to 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, but especially from Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria to Saxony and Lusatia it will be muggy and hot again with 30 to 35 degrees Celsius.

The German Weather Service also warns of severe thunderstorms and storms on Friday. According to the DWD, “strong thunderstorms with the potential for severe weather due to heavy rain, larger hail and sometimes heavy gusts of wind” are expected in the southeast half of Germany in particular.

The weekend is much more enjoyable throughout Germany with a friendly mix of sun and cumulus clouds and pleasant temperatures of 20 to 28 degrees Celsius. There are only showers and thunderstorms in the Alps and the North Sea. In the following week the heat comes back, but the temperatures on the thermometer don’t climb quite as high as they are at the moment.

Berlin – 36 and 37 degrees: The last few days have delivered one heat peak after another. And Thursday (August 4th) seems to up the ante with the weather in Germany. The forecasts promise record values of up to 40 degrees. Will we end up beating the record summer of 2003? An overview of where the heat will hit the hardest on Thursday.

Heat in Germany: Values of up to 40 degrees Celsius – the Upper Rhine is hit hardest

At these temperatures it can probably only be endured in the shade, indoors or with a fan. Thursday promises record values between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius, according to meteorologist Dominik Jung at wetter.net . The Upper Rhine is hardest hit. Here the temperatures should crack the 40 degree mark. The German Weather Service (DWD) also warns that there is sometimes extreme thermal stress in the Upper Rhine Graben. The south gets hit with highs of around 37. In the north, 31 to 36 degrees are to be expected.

So will 2022 be a record summer? It’s currently fourth place. The year 2003 lasted the highest mark. But for how much longer? The US weather model NOAA expects highs of over 35 degrees by the middle of the month. According to this, a record summer would be quite conceivable, because the next few weeks promise little relaxation when it comes to heat, as Jung also shows on wetter.net .

Heat and drought in Germany: The weekend again brings Ü30 weather values

After the hot days, the west can look forward to some rain from Thursday afternoon. A few strong thunderstorms are approaching in the northwest. According to the DWD , “storms with heavy rain of up to 30 l/sqm in a short time and larger hail of 2 cm” are also possible locally. There are also individual showers on the edge of the Alps. During the night, the thunderstorms gradually move further east. Above all, the particularly dry areas in the east of the Federal Republic hardly get anything.

After a brief cooling off on Friday, which mainly affected the north, the weekend promises to be hot and dry again. “The river levels continue to fall, the ships on the Rhine already have to travel with less cargo, which could soon come to a head again,” says weather expert Jung. The trend continues.

Seniors in particular have to pay attention to their values at the current temperatures. But sports should not be underestimated either. A few rules should therefore be observed when exercising in the heat – for the sake of the circulation. (chd)
