"Lentils, if you want them, you take them and if not, you leave them," says a well-known Spanish saying. However, medical studies suggest that it is better to eat them, whether we like them or not. To begin with, because consuming lentils and other legumes improves blood sugar control and reduces the risk of coronary heart disease in patients with type 2 diabetes, according to a study published in the latest issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine .
In addition, another study published recently in the journal Breast Cancer Research and Treatment suggested that their high content of folic acid makes lentils an ideal food to prevent breast cancer.
To this is added that the fiber and proteins provided by these legumes help prevent hypertension , according to a recent Australian study. And so that our body can absorb all the iron that lentils incorporate, experts recommend taking them with a glass of orange or grapefruit juice, due to their vitamin C content.
