We are used to seeing license plates with black letters and a white background. But you should know that there is also color on the license plates of certain vehicles, surely you have seen them. What do they mean?
We must distinguish between the ordinary ones and those with background colors that are intended for certain special vehicles.
Ordinary registration
According to the DGT, the ordinary registration is the one that is given, in principle, to the vast majority of the 34.8 million vehicles that make up the fleet in Spain. At present, this plate consists of four digits and three consonant letters , with the exception of the Ñ and Q. In addition to that, the license plate also includes the European blue band on the left side.
On red background
There are license plates with black letters and a red background. They are really striking and correspond to the license plates for trailers , that is, it is used to identify trailers and semi-trailers
In this case, they note that it has three groups of characters in black. It begins with a letter, is followed by a group of 4 figures and ends with 3 letters.
On blue background
Taxis and VTCs with up to 9 seats must have the rear registration plate with the characters in white on a blue background. These characters will be the same as those that appear on the ordinary license plate, which will be in front.
This measure, which came into force with Order PCI / 810/2018, has the main purpose of preventing labor intrusion in the sector and giving the client the assurance that the service is totally legal.
Yellow license plates
When it comes to referring to what the color of vehicle license plates means, the yellow ones correspond to moped license plates. They have different dimensions from those of the license plates for tourism . According to the DGT; two-wheelers up to 50 cc are registered with a yellow background and the characters in black.
For these vehicles the plate can be vertical. These plates, like those of motorcycles and scooters, have different dimensions than those of the license plates for cars.
Temporary license plates
They are granted provisionally prior to obtaining the definitive registration or simultaneously with the procedures for the registration of the vehicle.
- Authorization to individuals : green background, with white characters. Composed of the letter P, a number with 4 digits and 3 letters. There are several purposes (vehicles without bodywork, coming from abroad, acquired by auction or sentence without registering …) and three classes according to their duration: 60 days and for transferring the vehicle to the EU or abroad, where it will be registered again.
- Authorization to companies : with a red background, with the characters in white.
