What is a VPN and what is it used for? This is all you need to know

The Internet is the window to the world par excellence. In the network (sometimes not in the surface network, but in the so-called deep internet or Deep web) there is literally everything. However, this also opens the door for cyber criminals to try to scam us or for some organizations with spurious interests to steal all our data without our consent.

One of the ways we have to protect our privacy and ensure that we browse safely is through a VPN network. But what is a VPN and what is it used for? Here we tell you everything you need to know:

What is a VPN?

A virtual private network, or VPN, is an encrypted connection over the Internet from a device to a network. The encrypted connection helps ensure sensitive data is transmitted securely. It prevents unauthorized people from eavesdropping on traffic and allows the user to get work done remotely. VPN technology is widely used in corporate environments.

What is a mobile VPN?

A mobile-friendly VPN prevents slower browsing speeds and ensures greater data privacy for your entire device. Mobile VPNs generally have a smaller memory footprint and require less processing power than desktop VPNs, so they work much faster and save more battery power.

Almost all the major providers of this type of network have excellent and easy-to-use mobile VPN app options for their services. Some VPNs will only work with one type of platform, such as Apple or Android, and some are universally compatible.

What is the best free VPN service?

None of the free VPN services are recommended. While there are many great free online security and privacy apps out there, VPNs are sadly not among them. Secure VPNs cost companies a lot of money to operate and keep them secure, and the free ones are almost always malware-laden data snoops. But there is good news: the burgeoning VPN market is hyper-competitive at the moment, so prices for even the best VPNs are often less than $5 per month. In fact, the least expensive paid VPN option on the market today ranks in the top three VPN networks recommended by most IT experts for security and speed.

How many types of VPN are there?

There are mainly two types of VPN networks: remote access and site-to-site. The former securely connect a device outside of a company or corporate network. These devices are known as terminals and can be laptops, tablets or smartphones. As for the second, the site to site, connect the corporate network with the branches through the Internet, and are used when the distance makes it impractical to have direct network connections between these branches.
