It is clear that new technologies have improved our quality of life enormously. In our day to day, we no longer need to remember even a simple phone number or email. We simply save it on our device and it is in charge of associating it with a thousand and one applications that we will later use. There is no need to remember anymore .
This technological dependence that avoids the effort of memorizing the most common data leads us to what has commonly been called “digital amnesia”, that is , the experience of forgetting information immediately when entrusting it to a digital device so that it remembers it. for us . This simple gesture that turns our smartphone or similar device into an extension of our brain, affects people of all ages.
Why memorize information if our phone does it for us? A recent study by the Moscow-based security company Kaspersky Lab with 6,000 people revealed that more than half of mobile device users in the United States and Europe were unable to remember the phone numbers of their friends and neighbors ; 44% could not even remember the numbers of their relatives. Furthermore, 79.5% of the Europeans surveyed admitted that they use the internet as a universal reference book.
“Connected devices enrich our lives, but they have also sparked the birth of Digital Amnesia . We need to understand the long-term consequences and adapt the way we remember and protect those memories. The phone numbers of the people who matter most to us are just a click away, so we no longer bother to memorize the details, ”explains Alfonso Ramírez, CEO of Kaspersky Lab Iberia.
