What is the difference between an aperitif and an appetizer?

World Aperitif Day is celebrated today, September 19 and although we all know what the aperitif corresponds to, many are the people who sometimes confuse it with the appetizer , another small portion of food quite popular in our country and also, in the rest of the world. So now let’s know what difference is there between an aperitif and a hors d’oeuvre ?.

What is the difference between an aperitif and an appetizer?

When we are proposed to “have an aperitif” we all know that it corresponds to that beer with the odd tapa, or to have a soft drink accompanied by some food in the hours before lunch or even dinner. A kind of small intermediate meal that allows us to have a good time with whoever we share or that helps our stomach hold until lunchtime.

However, many people confuse the appetizer with the appetizer, thinking that they are the same but with two different words when in reality it is not so at all. We have made it clear that the aperitif is something prior to the meal, and the fact is that the appetizer is also, but the difference is that it is usually the small meal that is the main character and not the drink that on the other hand, not it may be missing from a good aperitif.

In other words, both the aperitif and the appetizer are a small bite that we take before lunch or dinner. A kind of “preparation” to eat, but normally the appetizer, as we have explained, consists of a drink (which is actually its base) to which we accompany some food “to nibble” , while in the case of the appetizer they are usually consisting solely of small bites of food that can also be sweet or salty or a combination of the two.

In this way we can find hors d’oeuvres based for example canapés, tartlets or also a variety formed by croquettes, dumplings and even small sandwiches. In addition, we can also find that the hors d’oeuvres are served just before lunch , something that does not usually happen with the aperitif that as a rule is usually taken in the middle of the morning when there may still be a couple of hours, or more, to eat.

For example, if we are at a wedding or a reception that includes a meal, it is normal for the guests to taste small hors d’oeuvres before going to the room or to the place where the food will be arranged. The same does not happen with the aperitif, which is usually related more to the fact of having it in a bar (or preparing it at home) and of course, with the aforementioned drink as the main element for tasting.
