In just ten years , the town of Kivalina , on the edge of the Bering Sea in Alaska, could become the first town in the United States to disappear underwater due to rising sea levels due to climate change. And its inhabitants (400 today) will become the first American refugees from global warming, as predicted by engineers, who announce that the place will be uninhabitable in 2025.
Not surprisingly, the accelerating thaw the Arctic is experiencing makes that place especially vulnerable to coastal erosion, and temperature records show that the Arctic region of Alaska is warming twice as fast as the rest of the United States.
