The fall lasted more than 10 hours around the world. Complaints on social networks did not stop multiplying yesterday, and the official response of the social network came through a statement on Twitter, in which they claimed to be “working” to solve as soon as possible the bugs that prevented downloading videos, notes voice and images. Facebook said its applications and platforms “returned to 100%” on Wednesday night after the outages suffered throughout the day, although some users have said they continue to experience problems.
Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp malfunctioned for most of Wednesday (including overnight).
Global drop
More than 14,000 users reported crashes with Instagram , while more than 7,500 and 1,600 users reported problems with Facebook and WhatsApp, according to outage-tracking website Downdetector.com.
The real-time outage map on that page showed that the problems arose mainly in parts of Europe and the United States. Many users, quite angered by what happened, posted on the rival platform Twitter to highlight the problem, which prevented images and videos from being uploaded correctly on other networks.
But Twitter also had technical difficulties. The platform said it was “struggling with some issues with DMs – direct messages – and notifications.”
Just when the hashtag #instagramdown appeared on Twitter and began to emerge in trends and rise in popularity, Facebook came out claiming to be working to solve the error in order to alleviate the social crisis of the moment.
On WhatsApp, some users found it impossible to send image, audio, and video files , while others on Instagram claimed that they couldn’t even see the images in their feeds. Users of the Facebook Messenger application also exposed that they could not upload or send images and videos.
A difficult moment
The outages on Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp came as Facebook is reportedly merging the three messaging platforms. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg set the goal of rewriting the core software for all of these applications to allow them to be interoperable.
Although Facebook has not responded directly to this, it commented through a press release that the problem was triggered “during one of its routine maintenance operations.”
Integration of Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp
“We are working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and we apologize for any inconvenience,” the statement read.
Facebook has more than 2.3 billion monthly active users and Instagram has 1 billion. With this failure, the Facebook company has suffered three major service drops in just four months. It experienced one of its longest outages in March, when some users around the world had trouble accessing Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp for more than 24 hours. The incident, although global, has not affected all regions of the world equally.
Today, the company has solved the problem “100%”.
