The surface of transgenic crops in the world has experienced significant growth, reaching a 39-fold increase in recent years. From 1996 to 2003 it has gone from 1.7 million hectares to over 67 million. Despite this, the speed of growth has not been uniform, since as of 1999 it slowed down, possibly due to legal and market introduction problems that these products are suffering, especially in the EU. However, the planting of transgenic crops has increased by 10% in 2003.
The transgenic varieties cultivated are reduced to soybeans -41.4 million hectares-, corn -15.5 million hectares-, cotton -7.2 million hectares? and rapeseed? 3.6 million ha-. In Europe, the largest producer is Romania . In our country, the increase has been 28% between 2002 and 2003.
