We wear it every summer and it has evolved over time. But perhaps you did not know that on July 5, World Bikini Day 2021 is celebrated, to make this garment more known, a milestone of each summer season.
This day has been celebrated since 1946, when the French automobile engineer Louis Réard invented this garment . It was presented by the dancer of the Casino de Paris, Micheline Bernardini, a garment that by then was considered very provocative and therefore more fabric was added later.
Its inventor gave this name to the garment in honor of a group of small reefs of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean, which was called Bikini Atoll.
Although it was unveiled in 1946 as we have it today, history reflects that some similarly designed garments were worn earlier as athletes in Ancient Greece.
In fact, mosaics are preserved in the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. C. where there are women in a kind of bikini. As early as 1913, the designer Carl Jantzen made his first two-piece swimsuit, consisting of shorts and a kind of short-sleeved T-shirt.
Subsequently, each manufacturer lowered the necklines and the sleeves were eliminated.
In the 60s it became known thanks to the different fashionable actresses of that time such as Brigitte Bardot, Marilyn Monroe, Jane Fonda …
A versatile garment
For a time they took the mini pants, a trend that is currently growing with versions that are very reminiscent of the past, in that vintage air that we all want to recover. However, the most traditional is the one with two pieces with triangles on top and knickers with ties at the bottom.
Now, on World Bikini Day 2021 we highlight that it is a very versatile garment, since it has from prints, to plain, sporty colors, to others much more stylish.
Sports garment
In addition to wearing it to go to the pool or the beach in summer, this garment is used in different sports such as athletics, bodybuilding, windsurfing or beach volleyball.
Thus it was approved as official clothing for the practice of the latter in 1994 by the FIVB (International Volleyball Federation). But the comfort that the one-piece swimsuit represents when playing sports means that most of the athletes continue to wear this piece.
