Taking care of your voice is not just a matter for musicians. This is explained by the Colombian-Cuban expert and vocal coach, who has more than 20 years of experience working with artists and in programs such as “A otro Nivel” and “La Voz”.
How to take care of the voice in these times of pandemic?
Caring for your voice is not as difficult as many others think, it is being aware of being aware of details. For example, vocal fatigue comes because with the mask we try to speak in a higher tone than we normally do. So increasing the intensity generates that fatigue. What I recommend is to try not to raise the volume too much, or the intensity, because we cannot stop wearing the mask and I think it will accompany us for a long time. We have to learn to love it and use it, perhaps gesturing a little more, but not shouting, there come the problems with our voice.
How is the process with the singers and other artists who live off their voice?
It is an incredible job, but a lot of responsibility. It is to give you the tools that I have known through time and study. It is also respecting individuality. The artists are very disciplined, I always tell the singers that you have to know the instrument, each voice is like a fingerprint. We must know what works for me and what doesn’t, but also what gives me a stamp. That’s where an artist becomes unique in his stamp and when what he is is respected.

Let’s talk about your beginnings, from the age of 9 you knew that you wanted to be a vocal coach, how did you feel that call?
From a very young age I had a passion for music, I am also a singer and oboist. In Cuba I had the opportunity to work, when I was little, in a program that was from 10 to 12 and was called “Entra” and since then this whole world has persecuted me. Little by little you are advancing along the way, you are discovering the passion for teaching others and from there begins the discovery of the vocal coach. For me it has been a gift to be able to help others; it is also closely linked to me as a singer.
What made you come to Colombia and stay?
I came to Colombia to work a few years ago and here many doors have opened for me, the doors of the hearts of Colombians. I have received a lot of warmth and affection. I am already nationalized, I am Colombian-Cuban and I consider that this country has always shown great respect for Cuban musicians. On an individual level, I started this project with Caracol Televisión in programs such as “La pista”, “Tu cara me suena”, “La voz”, “At another level”, “Yo me llamo” or “La Voz Kids”. There have been many opportunities, right now in “Sing with me” I had the opportunity to be a jury in Brazil. One thing leads to another and I am already living in Colombia with my family.

How have you experienced the guiding processes in programs like “A otro Nivel” or “La Voz”?
Those are great experiences, from which one also learns a lot. All the singers that I have had the opportunity to work have managed to learn from each one. Each singer is a world, the painter gives his emotions through what he does and there are already many worlds that I have had the opportunity to know, to guide, to support in moments that are competitively hard and also giving them the security to enhance those They have wonderful talents that have made them reach such important places as “At another level” and “La Voz”.

What is the most difficult part of caring for your voice?
The voice is closely linked to the emotional, because that instrument vibrates according to what you feel, what you think. Depending on how our emotions are, our instrument also reacts. It is not that there is a voice that tends more to this or that, but that all run the risk if they do not take care of themselves. Singing is very beautiful, because when you become aware of the care of your voice, you learn to know yourself and how to control yourself. This self-knowledge is necessary to take care of yourself and later take care of your voice. Anxiety, talking too harshly, talking a lot on the phone, that is, nothing is bad, the bad is excess. Everything in its proper measure ensures that there is that balance and that your voice is always healthy.
What happens when emotionally there is no balance?
We are human and in difficult times like this it is not always easy to maintain balance. That’s where the professionals come in to give advice, guide you or pull your ears when necessary.
