Kronborg Castle is definitely one of the top sights in Denmark. This impressive castle was the true inspiration for “Elsinore” in Shakespeare’s Hamlet and remains a popular attraction in Denmark year after year. In Danish, the castle is called Kronborg Slot. Travelers can find Kronborg Castle on the northern tip of the Danish island of Zealand. This castle is included in the Hamlet Castle Tour from Copenhagen and the North Zealand Castles Tour.

This is definitely one of my favorite attractions in Denmark. Almost everything here is made of Lego blocks… millions and millions of them! (Except the food). This is Legoland’s original amusement park that opened in 1968 and wows more visitors to Denmark every year. Countless rides and attractions for all ages, along with indoor activities, exhibits, and exciting new rides. Travelers find Legoland in Billund, in the heart of Denmark (150 miles west of Copenhagen).

The city of Aarhus has a historic old town that is undoubtedly one of the best places in Denmark. If you are not too far from Aarhus, visit the old town here. There are beautiful old houses, little shops, food and drink on offer, and many things to see. Travelers get a 50% discount on entrance to the old town from January to March, and children under 18 are always free.

Bornholm is a Danish island in the Baltic Sea, east of Denmark and south of Sweden, with the nickname “Pearl of the Baltic”. There are wonderful beaches, many bike paths, and 19th century architecture. You don’t need a car on Bornholm – Danish buses, bicycles and taxis are everywhere. To get to Bornholm, fly into Rønne-Bornholm Airport or check out the ferry connections.

The beaches in Denmark
Speaking of long sandy beaches… no matter what time of year you are in Denmark, you shouldn’t miss a trip to the nearest beach (even if it’s not among the best beaches in Denmark). In July and August, it is hot enough for swimming. The coast of Denmark with its sand dunes and vegetation is an ever-changing sight. Bring your camera and look for bunkers and lighthouses from WWII!

Amalienborg in Copenhagen is the winter residence of the royalty of Denmark, and also a very popular attraction in Denmark. In its Rococo style, Amalienborg Castle combines four externally uniform (but internally different) palaces around a courtyard. Travelers can witness the Changing of the Guard daily and / or enter two of Amalienborg’s palaces. A visit here is also part of the Grand Tour of Copenhagen.

The little mermaid in Copenhagen
Direction

What is Denmark’s biggest attraction, but also the smallest? The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, standing only 4 feet tall! The Little Mermaid sits near the shore of the “Langelinie” cruise port in her granite resting place, in the Nyhavn harbor area. It’s just a short walk from the main cruise ship pier, close to many of Copenhagen’s other top attractions and places to see architecture in Copenhagen.

You cannot visit the capital of Denmark and ignore the Tivoli. Especially if you are traveling as a family, the Tivoli should be at the top of your list of attractions and sights in Denmark. There is everything from serene parks and activities for younger children to attractions for teens and thrill-seeking adults. Open every day in summer from 11 am, closing time is between 10 pm and midnight.

The longest shopping street in Europe is also one of the main landmarks in Denmark. And there’s a top tip for all shoppers: cost-conscious travelers and bargain hunters should start shopping at the Rådhuspladsen end of Stroget. There you will find lower prices, simpler foods, clothing chains like H&M, and much more reasonable deals in general!
